Desalination
Desalination may be considered as a future downstream application within a broader deep sea water utilization system.
Freshwater Production as a Downstream Option
In coastal and arid regions, freshwater supply can be a major constraint on industrial and urban development.
A large-scale deep sea water intake system may provide the marine water infrastructure needed to consider desalination as one of several downstream applications.
Integration with Shared Infrastructure
The concept is not based on constructing a stand-alone desalination facility in isolation.
Instead, desalination may be integrated with cooling, aquaculture, marine plant production, and other industrial uses connected to a shared intake network.
Future Expansion Beyond a Single Application
The value of the infrastructure may increase when the same water resource supports multiple uses in sequence.
Desalination is therefore considered as a future extension of the wider Deep Sea Water Utilization Project.
